Jac’s sisters write in response to the recent R J Ellory scandal with particular reference to Jim Perrin

The recent furore concerning abuse of the internet by ill-intentioned, deceitful and dishonest authors is daily growing in momentum.

Jeremy Duns’ research by which he uncovered the scandal of the behaviour of crime-writer, R J Ellory, and which he has now made public, clearly resonates with many other authors and readers, including ourselves, as is shown by the number of articles (and following comments) on the subject.

In the course of our posts on ‘jacssisters’, we have given our own opinion that one of The Guardian country diarists, Jim Perrin, is someone who practises these deceits; and we have noted several names we believe he has used as aliases — possibly ‘hi-jacked’ — or even  perhaps ‘borrowed’ from friends or acquiescent acquaintances.

From July 2010 we were attacked by what, we have no doubt, were the pseudonymous postings of ‘Melangell’ (JP?)* on The Guardian thread which followed the review by Sir Andrew Motion of a questionable book by Jim Perrin; a book which contained many wicked lies about our sister Jac, (Jacquetta) — some of which were exceptionally distasteful. (Part 1) Former ‘Observer’ Editor Roger Alton replied to Jac’s Sisters about Jim Perrin

Within an opportunistically short time after our sister died in 2005, Jim Perrin wrote an article about her for the Observer and, we believe, plagiarised the title ‘Touching the Void’; Joe Simpson already had a book published — to much acclaim — and a film had been made of his book, using that title.

Readers might have thought that the feelings expressed in the article were ‘sensitive’, the author was ‘devastated’, his loss was ‘profound’. But wait… There Was a Book In It.

The truth is that Jim Perrin lied — we will not use the euphemism ‘economical with the truth’, and we knew that what we read in The  Observer was an adulterated blend of slight fact and flagrant fiction which the author had written as ‘autobiography’.

We contacted the editor, who then was Roger Alton, to ask that he would print our rebuttal; after all, as close sisters (and intimate friends) we knew the truth: our sister was not Jim Perrin’s ‘Lover, wife and friend of forty years’, and many of his other claims were wholly false or vile implication.  Continue reading →

Is Jim Perrin ‘Melangell’?

We wonder if we are the only ones who suspect Jim Perrin to be using aliases, (ref. our previous posts), and of planting spurious comments on the internet under the security-blanket of anonymity: and, of course, we do have proof that he wrote a wicked ‘anonymous’ letter back in 2005 (ref. our post Jim Perrin Writes an Anonymous Letter). As he was so dishonest in writing that letter we feel there is the strongest possibility that he might have written others.

One of our many contacts has just informed us that there is a long thread on The Guardian. The ‘Melangell’ entries show many of the usual ‘trade-marks’ of the author, Jim Perrin and it is our view that he is posing as a woman — ‘Melangell’ — with an opinion on everything and a comment on everybody and, unless fulsomely praising those whom he wishes — by flattery — to hold close to him and others whom he hopes to impress, writes in a style which is markedly egotistical, ‘know it all’, and frequently downright unpleasant. At least two of these comments were deleted by the moderator. Continue reading →
